Suffering occurs when the knower of thought resists and identifies with the contents of the mind, that are the thoughts, feelings and sensations arising moment to moment. Letting go of negative thoughts and feelings frees up the consciousness from being glued to endless repetitive thinking. In this meditation, you can observe the thoughts as they appear on the screen of the mind. Thoughts appear like so many clouds passing across the background of the sky. As you focus on the consciousness or space out of which these thoughts are arising, you experience the peace, the non-changing presence that you are, that is the background upon which thoughts are appearing. You can then choose to release negative thoughts, emotions and beliefs as they arise in the moment without holding on to them.
Anxiety, tension, stress, worry, and fear are caused by too much future, and not enough in the present moment. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of non-forgiveness are caused by too much past and not enough in the present moment. Living predominantly in the past is tragic because nothing can be changed about the past. Similarly, living in the future also has its problems, because the future only exists in the mind. It is said, “The past is history, the future’s mystery; the present is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present”. In this meditation we focus our conscious attention on the breathing and life energy, instead of life circumstances. Life circumstances are a collection of thoughts about the past and future which changes with time, however, life is timeless & changeless.
Mantra meditation is especially efficacious. In the Sanskrit language, man means mind and tra means to free. Mantra is a specific sound vibration that frees awareness from identification with the contents of the mind. The mantra actively replaces the endless flow of karmic thought, which pours into the mind space, with the illuminating spiritual sound vibration. This process is particularly proactive.
Whenever the attention strays, attention is gently returned to the mantra and the knower of the mantra. The result of this practice breaks the identification with thoughts, feelings and sensations that cause you to experience unhappiness. Because the vibration of the mantra is non-different from absolute intelligent source, the mantra assists consciousness in awakening to its ever-present condition of joy, peacefulness and certainty.
